KATHMANDU – Vivah Panchami, which is celebrated every year on Margashirsh Shukla Panchami, is being celebrated all over the country today by symbolically marrying Shri Ramachandra and Sita with worship.
To commemorate the marriage of Sita and Ram in the Treta Yuga, that is, on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, this festival is going to be celebrated today by worshiping Ram Sita all over the country. The marriage festival of Lord Sita and Rama is taking place today in Janakpurdham, the ancient capital of Mithila. As described by Goswami Tulsidas in Ramayana, the people of Mithila celebrate this festival as a special festival, remembering the day of Janakandani Sita’s wedding.
During the Treta Yuga, King Janaka of Mithila cut the Shiva bow for his daughter Sita’s Swayamvara into three pieces by Rama, the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. After breaking the Shiva bow, Rama and Sita were married in a grand ceremony on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami.
According to Ramayana, 56 crore gods and goddesses are believed to be present in the Swayamvar held at Janakpurdham’s arena. The people of Mithila, who consider Sita as their daughter-sister, participate in the festival from the arrival of the bridegroom to the wedding with joy, believing that the presence of the goddess is not physical but invisible.
During the celebration of the festival, according to the culture of Mithila, Matkor, Tilakotsava, Swayamvar and marriage rituals are performed. According to the legend, the idol of Lord Rama is placed on a specially made dola throne from the Ram temple along with the tableaus and tableaus and taken to the arena. Similarly, from the Janaki temple, Sita is carried to the arena on a specially equipped dola.
Sita-Rama is brought to the Janaki temple after the completion of Swayamvaravidhi, the trial marriage ceremony in the arena. After that the marriage is done according to Mithila culture. Devotees from various parts of the state and bordering Indian regions also participate in the Bhagwanko Dola Shobayatra which is set out on this occasion.
The laughter, jokes and the symbolic tableau of Sitaram coming from the village and the enthusiasm of the devotees in the number of lakhs surpasses the joy of the actual wedding.
This festival, which was earlier celebrated in Tirhutiagachi, has been celebrated with special programs at Rangabhoomi since two decades ago. Devout devotees bathe in holy lakes and rivers from early in the morning and offer prayers. On this occasion, bhajankirtan, ramleela, tableau and discourse are also being organized. It is believed that the desired fruit and salvation will be obtained after joining the wedding festival associated with the spirit of humanization of the deity.
The festival was earlier celebrated for a month, but now it is celebrated for five days. Similarly, marriage Panchami festival is being celebrated by special worship and festival in Ram Sita temples all over the country. Today, there is also a social belief that one does not need to marry.
It is said that after the public discussion that Ayodhyapuri in Madi Municipality of Chitwan is the birthplace of Lord Sri Ramachandra, the Department of Archeology is conducting a study with the participation of experts from this area. After the study report is received, excavation work will be started.
